CASE STUDY - CHANGI WATER RECLAMATION PLANT
(CWRP)
| Amiad Water Systems, Asia Pacific, FCS
BACKGROUND:
The sembcorp NEWater Plant is the biggest NEWater plant in Singapore and among the largest water
recycling plants in the world.
A plant area of about 10 Olympic-size swimming pools (12,300 m²) is used to supply NEWater capable of
filling over 90 Olympic-size swimming pools (228,000 m³) per day. The innovative “plant-on-plant”
design, with the main water recycling process facilities sited on the rooftop of PUB’s Changi Water
Reclamation Plant, minimizes land use and allows optimal integration of the site hydraulics and
structures of the Sembcorp NEWater Plant and Changi Wwater Reclamation Plant.
NEWater factory recovers good quality water from secondary treated sewage
effluent, for industrial and municipal use.
NEWater reclaimed water plant uses a combination of state-of-the-art
microfiltration and reverse osmosis systems that are designed for optimum
energy consumption. While the selected pre-filtration technology to protect the
membrane and as a result reduce the associated maintenance and increase the
life span of the membrane is Amiad screen filter.
In 2010, the Sembcorp NEWater Plant has been awarded as the Winner of 2010
Global Water Intelligence Global Water Awards - Water Reuse Project of the Year.
APPLICATION:
AMIAD filters are used here as pre-filtration and effectively removing the level of total suspended solid
(TSS) prior to micro-filtration – a process where treated used water is passed through membrane to filter
out and retained on the membrane surface colloidal particles, disease causing bacteria, some viruses and
protozoan cysts.
CLIENT & END USER:
This project was awarded to Semcorp Utilities Pty Ltd to Design, Build, Own & Operate (DBOO) the Changi
NEWater Plant for 25 years by Public Utilities Board Singapore (PUB).
PUB is a statutory board under the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources. It is the water agency
that manages Singapore’s water supply, water catchment and used water in an integrated way.
