A topographical fan showing the three best-known ports of China : Macao , Canton and Hong Kong ( left to right ), all surrounded by brightly colored Chinese symbols and decorations with a mauve border . Supported on superbly carved mother of pearl sticks . The reverse with a Mandarin scene depicting 48 figures in gardens and various settings all with applied bone painted faces and silk robes ( sometimes referred to as thousand faces ).
