ARCHIBALD COATES WIGAN GEORGE III MAHOGANY GRANDMOTHER ’ S CLOCK , 18 th Century , the dial inscribed Archd Coates Wigan ; the works 2 nd half of the 18th century , the mahogany case of later date ; eight-day weight driven movement with relatively rare man-o-war rocking ship automaton in arch above engraved steel dial with Roman chapter ring , brass cherub in the spandrels . Coates is recorded as a “ clock and watch maker of repute ”, Archibald Coates of Wigan was a prolific clockmaker working in Wigan , Lincolnshire from 1749 or a little earlier , until his death there in 1797 .
