Knab and dated lower left 1900 / 12 in original carved and gilt frame and stretcher . Ferdinand Knab was born in Würzburg and was initially trained in architecture . In 1859 he moved to Munich , where he attended the painting classes of Arthur von Ramberg ( 1819-1875 ) and Carl Theodor von Piloty ( 1826-1886 ). Later in 1868 he traveled to Italy , where he discovered his passion for romantic Ruin landscapes . Knab was a very sought after artist during his life time and was occasionally commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria for the Munich Residenz and the Linderhof Palace . 13 in . x 17 in .
