second consecutive month, pointing to domestic US
demand for smaller cc models recovering a lot more
slowly than for larger displacements; figures had
been positive for the year until August. September
exports were down -27.35 percent at 10,270 (down
from 14,137 in September 2012). This leaves year to
date figures down -4.46 percent at 112,894 (from
118,160 in the equivalent period in 2012).
US motorcycle sales up in September
CCORDING to the Irvine,
California based Motorcycle
Industry Council (MIC), total
motorcycle sales in the United States
in September were up by 13.4
percent compared to September
2012 at 36,476 units. Within that
figure on-highway motorcycles were
up by 16.1 percent, at 26,110 units.
This has left the total motorcycle
market up by 0.9 percent for the first

7,103 a year ago). Export figures for the year to
date are up +14 percent at 84,806 (up from 79,734
in 2012). This is encouraging after disappointing
August figures (down -23.07 percent on August
2012), and marks an upward trend for the US
market, in Japanese manufacturer terms, at a time
when their exports to Europe are shrinking

In year-to-date terms, the two best
performing motorcycle sectors have
been off-highway bikes (up 9.4
percent, at 55,802 units) and dualsport models (+7.9 percent, at
25,409 units).
After several years of promising
growth until the recession, the
scooter market looks like that it is
going to remain the last and slowest
of the domestic PTW sectors to
return to growth, with sales off by 16.7 percent (at 29,467 units) for the
first nine months of 2013.
