Kenneth G. Warren, in his article, “On ‘What Was African American Literature?’” (2010) he claims that the history of African Americans has significantly affected the history of America. Warren supports his assertion that African Americans are important to history by stating “black Americans continued to write imaginative literature” (Warren). His purpose is to make his audience aware that African Americans have created their own history in order to show how they influenced American Literature in the process. He establishes a comfortable relationship with his audience of literary scholars who have “debated endlessly when the Harlem Renaissance began” (Warren).
