Uncle Tom's Cabin
Published by Harriot Beecher Stowe in 1852, and made many Americans change their view of slavery. Demanded that Americans uphold promises and African Americans the rights of freedom and equality. Portrays the harshness of slavery, allowing readers today to understand it better.
Women of the Beat Movement
During the 1940's and 50's, a countercultural movement led by the Beatniks or "beats", took place. The generation notoriosly bred poets such as Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. Women are typically not focused on, although they played a role in the movement. Women such as Joyce Johnson and Carolyn Cassady were amongst this generation of turbulence filled with sex, alcohol, and drug use. Besides being affiliated with the beat trio, Johnson did contribute literary works that describe the lifestyle she lived at the time.
The Feminine Mystique
A book wirtten by Betty Friedan which introduced what is called "the problem that has no name", sparking the second wave feminsm. The book discusses the unhappiness
and discontentment of housewifes. Introduced the idea that women should be able to be a mother as well as fulfill her own happiness.
African-American Civil Rights Movement
Early politics such as the case of Plessy v. Ferguson, which constitutionalized segragation, have been important works in literature because it shows the unfairness and discrimination present. As well as the Brown v. Board of Education which proved to be a for the civil rightt because it nullified "separate but equal". Leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. have been essential to literature. Speeches and documents such as "I have a Dream" and "Letters From Birmigham Jail" once again allow scholars to view issues from a minorites perspective.

Declaration of Sentiments
Drafted by the women of the the Seneca Falls Convention, such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott. The first covention held by women that introduced the idea of Women's Suffrage. Ironically, the document nearly replicated the Declaration of Independence. The structure casued much controversy due to the fact that it implied that women cannot think on their own. The still is a contribution to literature showing progression of women.
