The Skirt: For the skirt, I
used the dust ruffle from
the bedskirt.
j. To create the skirt, I
trimmed the dust ruffle off of
the bedskirt, ran a gathering
stitch, and attached it to an
elastic waistband.  I then
added thread chain belt
loops to accommodate the
pink sequin belt and put the
outfit together.

Finishing Touches: While
a decent costume, I felt
that it was still missing a little
something that would take
it from “obvious thrift store
costume” to “well-thought-
out and professional costume
on a budget.”
When creating an outfit,
consider all of the elements.
If each piece has an extra
amount of detail save for one
or two key elements, it is
important to take the time
to add to the remaining
pieces so that the whole look
is balanced. I decided that
the best way to accomplish
this was by adding a hot
pink piping detail along the
bottom ruffle of the black
petticoat as well as along the
dust ruffle skirt.
k. I used a wide, long, zigzag
stitch on my sewing machine
to quickly attach hot pink
yarn in the desired location
and was immediately pleased
with the result.
l. It’s often a little extra touch
that brings a costume from
“eh” to “WOW!"
V. CONCLUSION
This project took
approximately 6 hours and
less than $20 to complete. It
took an open mind, creativity,
and taking the time to push a
project to become the best
possible version of itself.
Remember, all techniques
and approaches can easily
be utilized on costumes for
adults as well as children!
