California- National Parks
National Parks
Mother nature in all her glory
Sequoia National Park spreads across 400,000 acres in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Central California. Peer skywards in the park’ s aptly named Giant Forest which has over 8,000 colossal sequoia trees, including the General Sherman Tree, which is around 275 feet tall. Enjoy also Tunnel Log, epic viewpoints, superb hiking, such as the Moro Rock Trail, and caves. The adjoining Kings Canyon National Park features one of the deepest river canyons in North America, along with glacier-carved valleys, granite cliffs, alpine meadows and scenic byways.
An almost unfathomable place, Death Valley’ s 3.3 million acres encompass mountain-size dunes, expansive salt flats, mysterious singing rocks and colourful sandstone canyons. It is the hottest and driest place in North America with soaring summer temperatures, so it’ s recommended that you visit between late autumn and spring. During this time you can hike through the vibrant beauty of Golden Canyon, drive to Zabriskie Point for glorious sunset vistas or walk along the rim of Ubehebe Crater.
Attracting over four million visitors a year, UNESCO World Heritage listed Yosemite National Park is a true head-turner with its thundering waterfalls, deep valleys, towering trees and incredible granite peaks. The park’ s main visitor hub is the Yosemite Valley, and also the starting point for most hikes which vary from gentle to more strenuous. Top sights to marvel at include El Capitan, the undisputed king of the granite monoliths, Tuolumne Meadows, the much photographed Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, Wawona Tunnel View, Glacier Point and Mariposa Grove.
Other California national parks not to be missed are Joshua Tree for its otherworldly charm, dynamic flora, unique scenery and world-class stargazing, and Redwood for a chance to walk amongst the world’ s tallest trees.
