Big Island
Where the power of nature truly humbles
Officially Hawaii Island, it is often called‘ Big Island’ to distinguish it from the archipelago with which it shares its name. Nearly twice as big as all the other Hawaiian islands combined, its sprawling size is awe-inspiring. A must-see is the extraordinary Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, an International Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you’ ll find Kilauea volcano, one of the most active volcanoes on earth, as well as 150 miles of hiking trails through volcanic craters, scalded deserts and rainforests. After the heat of the volcanoes, why not cool off at an enchanting waterfall. Head to Wailuku River State Park to see the 80 foot Waianuenue, also known as Rainbow Falls, or north to the Hamakua Heritage Corridor and stop at Akaka Falls State Park to see its spectacular plunging waterfalls. Big Island also has some of the most picturesque and varied beach landscapes in Hawaii, from shores full of drama and crashing waves to more tranquil options. Keauhou Bay’ s waters are ideal for snorkelling, scuba diving and kayaking plus it’ s one of the only places in the world where you can view giant manta rays; Hapuna Beach has pristine golden sands and crystal blue water; while inviting Spencer Beach offers childfriendly swimming and a relaxed air. Walk in the shadows of history at Keauhou, the birthplace of King Kamehameha; or head to Kealakekua Bay and see where Captain Cook was killed in a skirmish with native Hawaiians. Further cultural offerings can be found at Pu’ uhonua! o Honaunau National Historical Park and the Historic Kailua Village which was once a retreat for Hawaiian royalty.
