It’s your call
In regards to your article about identity
theft (“It’s Personal”), I’m always disappointed that no one ever mentions
what I believe to be the best protection
against telephone fraud: call display.
If a call comes in and you don’t recognize the number—don’t answer! Let
the caller leave a message. After listening to the message, you can determine
if it’s legitimate and call them back. I
started “selective answering” when my
children were young, so we could enjoy
our dinner, uninterrupted—and the
habit has stuck. I’ve had messages left
by scammers claiming to be Canada
Revenue agents, ready to arrest me.
Messages like that are easy to ignore
when you haven’t engaged with the
[fraudulent] caller.

Not that cold
In your spring issue (“Electric
Avenues”), you mentioned that Alberta
has a wintry climate comparable
to Norway. But that would be quite
a stretch: The lowest temperature
there in the winter is around –11°C,
sporadically and only in certain places.
The Gulf Stream and North Atlantic
Drift make the Norwegian climate
quite temperate.
