A SHARED WORK PROGRAM CAN
HELP YOU THROUGH A PERIOD
OF DECLINING REVENUES
Many businesses
are continuing to
experience a decline in
revenue despite states
reopening. If you are
in this group, a potential option to
explore is tapping into a Shared Work
Program. In particular, here are some
benefits to New York’s Shared Work
Program:
1. KEEP YOUR TEAM TOGETHER.
No business owner wants to have
to make the call to lay off staff.
Unfortunately, it is often the sad
reality that there is no other choice.
Using the Shared Work Program
can, in many cases, allow you to not
have to make that tough call. Instead
of eliminating one or more jobs, you
can reduce the schedule of groups
of employees by 20%–60%. New
York will subsidize the income loss
through unemployment benefits,
and employees will not need to look
for new jobs. When the additional
$600 federal unemployment benefit
was in effect, individuals on Shared
work also received this benefit in full,
no matter their schedule reduction
percentage.
2. CORPORATE OFFICERS ARE
ELIGIBLE.
According to New York, “[a] corporate
officer is a person who manages
the affairs of a corporation as an
officer and/or stockholder, director,
family member, or close relative of
an officer or stockholder.” In normal
circumstances, such individuals are
not eligible for the Shared Work
program. But due to the pandemic,
an exception has been made through
December 31, 2020. If your business
role is reduced due to decreased
client demand, you are eligible to be
on the program.
3. BENEFITS ARE FEDERALLY
FUNDED UNTIL THE END OF 2020.
While Shared Work benefits
are normally charged against an
employer’s experience rating account,
for claims filed between March
30, 2020, and December 27, 2020,
Shared Work benefits are federally
funded and no charges will be applied
to the employer’s account, with the
exception of temporary, intermittent,
or seasonal employees.
If your business is located in New
Jersey, good news. They also have a
Shared Work program. However, the
details of how New Jersey administers
its program is not readily available
over the web. Here are shortened
