Alvarado Lake Plenty of fish available in stocked lake

Alvarado Park Lake is a 507-acre countyowned reservoir that was built in 1966 by Jack P . McKinney for floodwater retention , municipal water storage and recreation . It is controlled by the City of Alvarado .
The lake is formed by damming the Turkey Creek , a tributary of Chambers Creek and the Trinity River . It drains 31 square miles and is impounded by a 3,500-foot-long dam 49 feet high with a spillway level of 704.1 feet .
A public boat ramp is located on the north side of the lake , as well as a private residential boat ramp on the southeast side . The northside public boat ramp is open all year and fee-free . Contact City of Alvarado for overnight or weekend use . No overnight camping is permitted . Fish habitat in this lake is dominated by shoreline stands of bulrush , American waterwillow , cattail and common buttonbush – boat docks and piers and moderate amounts of bulk heading . The rip-rap dam and over-hanging trees and brush also attract and hold fish throughout much of the year . The Waco Inland Fisheries District built and deployed rectangular PVC fish habitat structures near the lower end of the reservoir to help attract and hold sportfish for anglers . This is the only freshwater reef that has been deployed in Alvarado Park Lake . Predominant Fish Species include largemouth bass , channel catfish , white bass and crappie . Randy Essex holds the record for the largest fish ever caught at the lake — a 14.8-pound , 31.5-inch blue catfish caught on April 10 , 2009 .
