Spotlight, continued
A strong foundation from National University helped further prepare the future ND. When recalling her time at NUHS, she said one of her most memorable experiences was“ any class with Dr.( Marc) McRae-- he was very engaging, and studying biochemistry in his class changed the way I learned— everything.”
“ Having access to, and being able to work in the anatomy lab, taught me not just about the human body, but also how people work together. Professors, students, TAs – all of those different roles and relationships working together brought a lasting, learning experience. It’ s where I learned about the importance of community.”
“ Being in community with other practitioners doesn’ t only give you referrals, you build relationships as healers— you find common ground— you speak the same language. I work alone in my practice, and having those professional relationships is a wonderful resource.”
“ That’ s one of the most important things I’ d like to share with students: to make connections with people in their community.” This insight is what prompted her to locate her business within Soteria Wellness, an established practice dedicated to natural wellness.
“ Collaborating this way increases the scope of what I can offer my clients, namely adjunctive therapies such as infrared sauna and bio-electromagnetic therapy options. Soteria has an amazing impact on health and allows me to offer them even more,” she said. In addition, the facility’ s space accommodates community presentations.“ It’ s wonderful to give talks and provide information about different topics and therapies.”
She also counseled that graduates should not be afraid to step out and be who they are.“ It can be hard for new doctors to step up and out in their [ broader ] communities as well— they have concerns about how their clients will find them. Social media, health talks, whatever your niche is, be who you are and let them know you’ re there!”
Gates remains a devoted scholar and lifelong learner in pursuit of balance. As for what lies ahead, she’ s preparing to grow her practice, perhaps expand her education by finishing degrees in chiropractic medicine and acupuncture, and one day going on to teach.
