NUHS Journals: More Valuable Than Ever!

National University is proud to own the three leading journals for the chiropractic profession. These three journals offer the best in research and forward thinking from international and inter-professional researchers to the integrative medical world.

Their value is even more important in today's changing health care landscape. Third-party reimbursement policies are trending towards evidence-based backing for procedures. Ray Tuck, DC (NUHS 1997) is the owner of Tuck Chiropractic Clinic in Blacksburg Virginia, which employs 16 DCs in 11 locations. “In today's world, everything is switching to value-based care, so everybody must find the highest value. When you glean the journals, you are able to see the most relevant and best way to deliver chiropractic care,” says Dr. Tuck.

“If you haven't read one of the NUHS journals in a while, take a look at our more recent issues,” says Dr. Johnson. “You will see articles that are both valuable to the profession and in a format that enables doctors to apply evidence in ways that enhance their practices.”

NUHS Journals

The "Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics" (JMPT) was first published in 1978 and is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the advancement of conservative health care principles and practices. Published by Elsevier, it focuses on original basic science and clinical research articles. The editorial board includes expert researchers from medicine, osteopathy, chiropractic, and post-secondary education.

“There's no journal other than the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) that allows for in-depth research of the mechanisms of manipulation,” says Gregory Cramer, DC, dean of research at NUHS. “Understanding how manipulation works is extremely important when communicating with other health care professionals, and the research provides the basis for treatment.”

While JMPT is widely considered the NUHS flagship journal, physicians may find a wealth of practical information in the "Journal of Chiropractic Medicine" (JCM). The JCM contains a wide variety of practical studies with results that DCs can apply immediately with current patients. The JCM offers a wide range of topics, including: sports chiropractic, care of children, chiropractic technique, nutrition, rehabilitation, care of aged patients, public health issues, diagnostic imaging, and many others that may be included within the scope of chiropractic and integrative care.

The "Journal of Chiropractic Humanities" (JCH), which is currently celebrating its 23rd issue this year, is an annual publication. “The objective of the JCH is to create an environment that promotes legitimate dialogue in a field where a diversity of opinion exists,” says Dr. Johnson. “No other chiropractic journal is solely dedicated to philosophical discussion that is done in this scholarly, rational, and professional manner.”

In an era where publications are increasingly exchanged for digital information, the NUHS journals are more robust than ever. They are included in a multitude of electronic medical and science databases, and provide an important part of the body of research. “Compared to 10 years ago, we are receiving more and more research articles from interdisciplinary and international author teams,” says Claire Johnson, DC, MSEd, editor in chief of all three NUHS journals, noting the journals' growing penetration into the integrative medical research arena.
