THE NEWSLETTER FOR NUHS ALUMNI
Greetings from the President
In this issue of the Alumnus , we look back at this year ’ s Homecoming : a much-welcome return to a gathering of alumni and friends representing National ’ s rich history , and bright future . The pandemic mandated hiatus gave occasion to step back and really take in what Homecoming is all about . This very special event , having been absent from the NUHS calendar , allowed many of us at the university to take in the happenings with a fresh , new approach . And , for those who attended , it served as a wonderful reminder of the outstanding leadership that the institutions fosters .
Homecoming has always provided a means to catch up with the larger university community in a way that social media , in any format , can ’ t accommodate . This year was especially important . Even though we have all gone through countless virtual meetings , the level of disconnectedness in our lives has been exceptional . Despite technology allowing and catalyzing new ways to interact , the overwhelming sentiment shared by those I spoke with was that of gratitude for the in-person interactions with peers .
Those interactions , with both new and longstanding members of our community , remind us that we need to reconnect now more than ever . I was delighted to see President Emeritus , Dr . Winterstein induct our past Chairman of the Board , Dr . Roger Schlade into the Hall of Honor . There is not a better illustration of leading by example . Dr . Schlade has been an active member of the university community for decades . He would often load up prospective students and bring them to Homecoming on his own dime . He was incredibly active in his state society and continues to be generous to the university to this day . Dr . Winterstein , a Hall of Honor inductee himself , was able to reiterate the years of service that afforded Dr . Schlade a place in the Hall of Honor at the Illinois campus . To watch those two interact should fortify the pride in every alumnus and inspire our next generations .
Of course , I would be remiss if I did not call attention to the watershed event of the weekend : the dedication of our LRC in honor of Dr . Winterstein . It is fitting that both Janse Hall and the James F . Winterstein Library stand next to one another on the Illinois campus . While Dr . Janse was committed to the organization and recognition of chiropractic and naturopathic medicine , Dr . Winterstein is responsible for the elevation of the education .
During the dedication celebration , attendees recounted story after story regarding the guidance that Dr . Winterstein provided over the years many of which would be well placed as an example of why the library was dedicated in his honor . However , I will add a small , additional , behind the scenes , story instead . While determining the two quotes that would be placed on the wall , adjacent to the timeline , we earmarked roughly three dozen inspiring quotes taken from the articles , letters , and research penned by Dr . Winterstein over the years . I was astonished that we were able to narrow it down to just two . The third will be provided by Dr . Winterstein in the near future . I have no doubt that it will speak of leadership .
Many thanks to the attendees and sponsors who took the time to reconnect . We honored some of our greatest members and met the forthcoming ones . Evidence of a rich history and bright future , indeed .
