It was a casual and simple acquaintance that lasted for sev- eral years of delightful friendship. He was a batch older than me from the extra active Batch 87. Known to be a “campus figure” during our high school days; a student council officer, President of the Filipino Club and Social Action Club, mem- ber of the Peer Ministry and strings of other socio religious organizations. He was a decorated personality in our cam- pus who steered school programs when he was starting his potential craft as host, accidental dancer and singer and any other role I could have imagine. More than thirty years after high school, this guy never fails to impress me. Nolan Angeles of Batch 87 takes his “Bosconian” blood seri- ously and takes his devotion to another level. He is a staunch propagator of the devotion to Mary Help of Christians. In fact he has quite a number of images displayed in various Marian exhibits and processions not only in the Metro but in nearby provinces as well. Basilica of Mary Help of Christians Turin, Italy ALUMNUS ELEVATES DEVOTION TO ANOTHER LEVEL by Biboy Lora For many years now, Nolan finds time , at least every week- end to go out and explore the provinces. But unlike most tourists seeking local festivities and popular tourist destina- tions, Nolan habitually searches for the image of Mary Help of Christians in chapels, sitios and barangays not yet known to the National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians in Pa- ranaque . Mr. Angeles does this in order to help the National Shrine to document each and every place where there is an image of Mary Help of Christians. A mission to further deter- mine the extent of the devotion to Mary Help of Christians in the whole country. This noble knack and devotion make the routine for Nolan to report to the National Shrine and establishes coordination with the staff down to the local parish where the “discovery” was made and mapped such in the devotion site network . His weekend discoveries are no joke. Most of the places he goes to are only reachable via plane or ship and bangkas . He remembers going up the mountains just to be able to see an image of Mary Help of Christians in Lumayang Zam- boanga Del Sur. There was even a time he has to endure the rough sea just to be able to see an image of Mary Help of Christians in Romblon Province. One unforgettable ordeal he had and even thought it was his last day, clinched-moment surviving and enduring an almost hour bangka ride in an approximately 3- storey building tall waves just to reach a chapel in an island in Albay. Despite the ordeal and the life-challenging moment, Nolan loves and finds fulfilment in what he is doing. A year ago, he took his devotion to another level and made it his “mission”. Then he came up with his own tagline “Misyon Debosyon:. This time around, aside from searching for the images, he brought with him images of Mary Help of Christians and donates it to chapels and churches all over the Philippines. His mission has brought him as far as Batanes in the North, to the provinces in the Visayas and even in the Islamic City of Marawi and other places in Mindanao. There are so many other titles conferred by the Catholic Church on the Blessed Virgin Mary . Among them are Our 14
