Preceptor Spotlight
Learning from the Best
by Angela Parente MPAS, PA-C
Dr. Jasdeep Sohi is a preceptor for Lake Erie College physician assistant
students at Signature Health, where she has worked as a child and
adolescent psychiatrist for the past six years. She began providing
psychiatry rotations to physician assistant students in 2017.
Dr. Sohi attended medical school at Mysore Medical College (India) and
completed her psychiatry residency at Southern Illinois University.
Following her residency, Dr. Sohi completed a fellowship in child and
adolescent psychiatry at Case Western Reserve, University Hospitals.
While in medical school, Dr. Sohi took an early interest in psychiatry.
“During medical school my experience with psychiatry came across as both
challenging and interesting. Some personal incidents in life influenced my
career choice. As a child psychiatrist, I can help children reduce negative
consequences in life by early intervention and treatment. Sometimes while
working with children, trying to help parents understand the true needs of
their child can be challenging, but it is of utmost importance.”
Commenting further, Dr. Sohi also added, “I feel every mental health
program is unique and in need of an individualized plan of care.”
Dr. Sohi appreciates the presence of Lake Erie College physician
assistant students, as it affords her an opportunity to stay current in her
field. “Teaching prompts me to keep myself up-to-date. I learn new things
from the students. They are respectful and come with a solid foundation. I
always reinforce continued learning and for them to take a moment every
once in a while to celebrate their accomplishments.”
Dr. Sohi precepts Lake Erie College physician assistant students along with
advanced practice providers Michell McDiffett PA-C, Kelly O’Connor
PA-C, Sue Whitaker CNP, and Anna Whitmer CNP. The professionalism,
dedication to medicine, and commitment to their students is continuously
demonstrated with each rotation. Physician assistant student Tyler
Tsangaris-Braatz said, “At Signature Health, I had the pleasure of
working with children with Dr. Sohi and adults with my other
preceptors. Whether I was performing mental status exams, autism
spectrum and ADHD questionnaires, or interviewing patients at a local
group home, my experiences have always been positive. My wonderful
rotation at Signature Health was made possible by the kind and helpful staff
and of course, my great preceptors.”
In her free time, Dr. Sohi enjoys traveling with her husband and family
whenever possible.

SNAPPS
Create a collaborative learning
conversation while following a learner
initiated, preceptor facilitated SNAPPS
mnemonic using these six steps:
1. Summarize briefly the history and
findings
2. Narrow the differential to two or
three relevant possibilities
3. Analyze the differential by comparing
and contrasting the possibilities
4. Probe the preceptor by asking
questions about uncertainties,
difficulties, or alternative approaches
5. Plan management for the patient's
medical issues
6. Select a case-related issue for
self-directed learning
This model encourages the student to
identify learning needs while guiding the
preceptor to further develop their
knowledge
base
during
patient
presentations and discussions.
