Dr. Sheila Young-Mercado, Assistant Professor at Morehouse School of Medicine was appointed as President of the Association of Black Women Physicians
A proud Oakland native and Charles R. Drew alumna, Dr. Young- Mercado has been a member of ABWP for 17 years.
As President, she’ s committed to supporting women in medicine, building awareness around intimate partner abuse and expanding the organization’ s reach nationwide.

Jahmil Lacey was announced as the UCLA Health Equity Challenge(# HEC2025) winner. Jahmil Lacey’ s project establishes a culturally responsive, trauma-informed community referral system at the St. Julian barbershop in Compton to help young Black men and youth who have been victims of violence.

Lacey’ s project would connect 50 patients ages 12 – 30 treated through the Harbor-UCLA Hospital Violence Intervention Program to a barbershop-based recovery hub in their neighborhood immediately after hospital discharge. Recovery services would include peer-led group therapy, one-on-one case management, and other supports.
Dr. Adrienne Martinez-Hollingsworth has been elected to the Board of Directors for the National Association of Hispanic Nurses( NAHN). She extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported and encouraged her on this journey.“ I’ ve dreamed of this for years,” she shares.
“ I’ m honored to serve and help shape the policies and strategies that advance Latine health equity across the U. S. and beyond.” Adrienne is proud to continue her work with AltaMed Health Services, where she remains deeply committed to public health leadership and impact.
