THE MENTOR THE MENTEE As a mentor you will provide your student with advice about navigating the career market. Conversations on workplace culture and expectations and job roles and responsibilities are excellent starting points as you determine where your mentee’s interests lie. You’ll listen to your mentee and ask engaging questions, expand their horizons and help build their confidence. Mentees are domestic or international students either in their penultimate or final year of an undergraduate Business School degree or enrolled in a postgraduate Business School degree with limited professional work experience in Australia. Students attend training sessions prior to the start of the Mentoring Program in the areas of professional behaviour, business etiquette and networking. They are coached on how to manage a mentoring relationship but they will often need your help to drive the discussion and set the agenda for your meetings. For some students, this program is their very first experience in the business world. Business students are likely to have multiple career changes throughout their lifetimes. Encourage them to think broadly and boldly about the opportunities available to them. Using your career journey as a touchpoint, share your career story explaining the various positions you have held and what led you to each role. And remember, mentorship is just as instructive an experience for the mentor as it is for the mentee. By reflecting on your career and current position you may just discover something new about yourself.
