The much anticipated 25th edition of the Wazee Vijana rugby game took place on 14th July, 2018 at the Impala Sports grounds. The rousing game attracted a lively crowd despite the chilly weather and eventually saw the Wazee team maintain their winning streak. They thrashed their competitors with a score of 57-0. The top scorer for the alumni team was Kevin Shabira.

The initial schedule of the day had included two sessions; a game of touch rugby was slotted for the first session while contact rugby would be played in the second session. However, due to time constraints the teams were only able to play contact rugby. This change did not sway the enthusiastic fans who still maintained high spirits as they cheered their favourite players on the pitch when the game finally began.

From very early in the game the Wazee team managed to get a lead and impressively maintained this throughout. This is not to say that the Vijana took a back seat and let the Wazee beat them; on the contrary they kept each other on toes. At one point during the match things got heated between a player from the Wazee team, Sam Onyango, and Seth Malingu from the Vijana team. Their team members were however quick to separate the two and maintain a spirit of sportsmanship.

The annual game is an important event on the rugby team’s calendar. It is a chance for alumni to reminisce on the good old days they had while at USIU-Africa. Additionally, it is a chance for networking, the alumni tend to help the students in terms of mentorship after the game and also exchange contacts and try to help those who are about to graduate in the job industry.
