MESSAGE FROM THE ALUMNI OFFICE
By Uvyu Mbole
I am delighted to welcome you to our new digital magazine. 2017 has been a fruitful year and I could never be more grateful to all the volunteers who have supported our events and activities. Our efforts have been guided by our key strategic pillars namely: Governance, Engagement and Benefits.
Governance
The Alumni Association exists to serve the alumni and this can only be done through a proper governance structure. I am happy to report that
we now have a new constitution found here to govern our activities. I would also like to mention that the Alumni Executive Committee was re-elected during the Annual and Special General Meeting held on July, 1st 2017 at USIU-Africa. I thank all those who participated in that forum and extend special gratitude to the Alumni Association Executive Committee, which has continued to show its relentless support and commitment towards achieving its strategic goals.
This year also saw us file returns that had last been remitted in 1995 and registered the re-elected officials with the Registrar of Societies making us compliant with the body’s requirements.
Engagement
Alumni share a special and a strong connection with their alma mater regardless of their location. This year has seen us hold several events and forums that have brought our alumni together. Our highlight was the TechWomen event held in February 2017 which brought together around 600 women to discuss the place of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in their lives.
Through the Alumni Association Executive Committee, USIU-Africa hosted the recently concluded Tedx Ridgeways event which gave us mileage when it comes to visibility. We also had other engagements such as the first ever event for young alumni that focused on addressing expectations that recent graduates have versus the actual situation on the ground. The Psychology alumni held their inaugural conference this year and the Journalism alumni also held their first reunion. We have continued to show our support to different groups within the Association and if you are interested in forming an interest group, you can do so here.
When it comes to social media, we have strived to keep you updated on our endeavors and I encourage you to join us on Facebook and Twitter to receive timely updates from our activities.
