Sport A day of determination By Cadet E. Townsend In May, 2497 Cosford Squadron set out to RAF Cosford for a day of Inter-Squadron Athletics. The weather reports were looking hopeful and we were determined to take home first place trophies and medals! As we all arrived, we saw how strong in numbers we were! After a warm up in the rain; this was three laps of the track (but only one or two for some). They started the first events which were the track events. Some events we didn’t do too well in but we kept our spirits up and didn’t give up, because we know that cadets from Cosford squadron are try- ing their best and that’s what counts. We had a close few races, winning gold here and there with a few silvers as well. After the races, we got a bite to eat and we all went up to Budgens to get more drinks and more food. We were ready to continue. The field events were more successful for Cosford. With shot put, long jump, high jump and javelin. The shot put wasn’t bad at all. The long and high jumpers put in a lot of effort and they tried their hardest as they were up against tough competition. The javelin was the best of them all, as Cadet Turner won gold with the length of 11m 10cms. It was strict competition and it was a real nail biter! The end was nearing but the last events weren’t over, we still had the relay to get through. The teams were ready and in position. The starting gun sounded and everything seemed fine when Flight Sergeant Stokes tripped and fell. The medic took her away with a sprained wrist but she is fine now. We then formed up on parade for the presentation of the medals and trophies. I am happy to say that despite not winning as much, we still walked home with our heads held high!.● Golden moment! By Cadet B. Turner On the Sunday 11th May at 0800 hours, confident Cosford cadets were ready as ever to compete in the Inter-Wing Athletics. The sun even managed to make an appearance, boosting our spirits higher than ever. Everyone was eager to get started, so we all headed over to the stadium. When we arrived in the Athletics Stadium, we soon found somewhere of our own to put down our things, before going to warm up. We were allowed 10 minutes of warm up time, running around the track, before we were told to go back to our places. Then, there was short announcement of how the day was going to work, and then the Inter-Wing Athletics was underway! 12 There were a few people who collapsed after their races due to over-working themselves. Admittedly, this made us slightly more apprehensive. But there was little need, as we tried our very hardest, and that’s all that mattered! The atmosphere was great, although tense at times, but exciting most of the time! When it wasn’t our events, we had the chance to watch the other events going on, usually the track events, as they were closest. We cheered our West Mercian Wing on, and supported them throughout their events. We had a lunch break at about 1200 hours, where we had the chance to go and get some food from the shop, and have a well-earned relax. We all made sure we ate and drank plenty, as we knew that it would help our performance. And so it did, as I delivered an outstandin g throw in Javelin, winning first place for West Mercian Wing! The other Cosford representatives did extremely well, but unfortunately didn’t win, but we still walked away with our heads in the sky, carrying gold in Javelin! At about 1500 hours, we all formed up on parade, and the awards presentation took place! I am pleased to say that 2497 Cosford Squadron came 2nd place overall! The winners of the day were Merseyside Wing, but we were very happy to have won 2nd! The whole day was very enjoyable, and a good chance to proudly represent our Wing in the Inter-Wing Athletics..● 2497 (Cosford) Squadron Altitude | Summer 2014
