RAF COSFORD AIR SHOW
By Cdt. P. Boyle & Cdt. J. Hawthorn
The morning started with a very early start
with cadets arriving at Cosford for 7:00am,
regarding the early start the cadets still
arrived with high spirits for the long day
ahead! After a short parade the squadron’s
band were fired up to show off our talents,
with the band gone it left the cadets to get
prepared for our busy day looking after the
ground displays and keeping pedestrian
traffic running smoothly. We brought along
the squadron climbing wall to show the
young children the opportunities that arise
while being a cadet, the climbing wall was
ran by Cdt. S. Boyle, Cdt. G. Williams, Cdt.
N. Cook and FS. Stokes. During the day Air
Commodore McCafferty and Group Captain
Allen visited the Air Cadets surprising us
all as we didn’t expect such high ranks to
say hello. At 8:30 sharp the cadets were
on duty guarding the static aircraft which
included: GR1 Tornado, GR3 Harrier, Grob
Tutor, GR3 & T2 Jaguar, King Air B200,
Chinook, Squirrel, Griffin, Sea King,
Gazelle, and Merlin. Our favourite job was
looking after the Jaguars and the Harrier,
two of the most iconic jets around.
The displays started off with the brave RAF
Falcons parachute display team showing
an equal balance between bravery and
skill; as soon as the Falcons feet hit the
ground the Eurofighter Typhoon roared
past, unfortunately while Cdt. P. Boyle and
I were eating our lunch the typhoon flew
by meaning we missed the whole display,
soon after the Typhoon the F-86 Sabre
made a grand entrance ripping through the
air demonstrating its amazing speed. The
Pitts Special was up next and he didn’t
hold back on showing us his supernatural
skills in the air, he somehow managed to
stay vertical as if he was in a helicopter
defying all I knew about physics, following
that was the remarkable Battle Of Britain
Memorial Flight which is not to be
forgotten with the hum of the Lancaster’s
Rolls-Royce engines when the Spitfire,
Merlin and Lancaster waved goodbye the
Red Arrows steamed passed with their jaw
dropping display ending in the famous
arrow through the heart, next was the
Apache flew by Prince Harry himself which
was a surprise for everyone that attended
the event, the Chinook left the ground
soon after darting around the air as if it
was a bag took by the wind showing its

amazing manoeuvrability in the air, later
was the Vulcan one of the amazing V
Bombers which didn’t disappoint showing
us why it is so well know across the globe,
Finally was The Blades (ex red arrow
pilots) flung around the air proving why
they were red arrow pilots their display
was anticipated all day by many of the
people that attended.
When the day had come to a close all we
had left to do was to pack the tents away
and send out the band to once again
amaze the crowds with our amazing
musical talents, overall the day was one to
remember with the sun staying out all day
and the spirits of the cadets staying high
throughout the day, we will sure be
showing our faces again next year. ?
