SNCO Course
Last month Cpl. Giles took part in a senior
NCO course. She writes to tell us how she
got on.
“I attended the senior non commissioned
officer (SNCO) course which is a course
designed to enable a JNCO to take the
next step in the training process to become
capable of the role of Sergeant and
above (Senior) from Friday 20th April till
Sunday 22nd of April at RAF Cosford; we
stayed in the Boyle block.
A number of cadets from various squadrons arrived on the Friday evening at
2000 hours and met in the block. Our evening began with a basic introduction and
pen picture of each other. The evening
continued with uniform preparation and
some social interaction. We were up at the
crack of dawn 0550 hours to start the day
with final uniform preparation, breakfast
(we had our meals at the junior ranks mess
and I must say the food was good) and the
dreaded uniform inspection. Following on
from this and throughout the day we practiced the current drill manual and continued with various lessons including the roll of
a SNCO, Morale, problem solving, discipline and welfare, ending the afternoon
with putting into practice how to teach
drill. On the Saturday evening we came
together and created individual activities
with a scenario in which related tasks
would need completing, we passed over
all the relevant information and then sat
back and observed at the end of the task
we came back together to see how the
other person felt they did, this was great
practice for the inevitable exam on Sunday, although this is very hard although
this is very hard to describe it was a great
laugh and fantastic seeing everyone else’s
ideas. We eventually settled down to bed
at approximately 2300 hours.
Sunday morning we rose once again at the
crack of dawn with a few nerves in the air
as today was Exam day! With uniform
inspection and breakfast done we sorted
our rooms and then headed for the exams
at our squadron (2497), these exams included drill, individual exercises and group
tasks. We were all complete by 1500
hours which just left our final brief, collection of our belongings and saying goodbyes.
I really enjoyed the whole experience, I
met some great people from other squadrons and I feel that I have learnt some new
skill sets and achieved a great deal. We
were all informed that we passed the drill
side of the exams but need to wait a few
weeks for our final pass or fail result.”
