Rage filled my head, was he trying to fool me? He thinks that I’m just some little kid that he can play pranks on?! I was about to say something very rude to him when in a flash, he shoved me to the ground. I was winded and swallowed some dirt as I was trying to get some air. When the man didn’t move I roughly shoved him off then stared confusedly at my hands. There was blood dripping down my hands onto my uniform shirt. It was deep red like the colour of roses. I looked towards the man. There was blood blossoming onto his shirt. There were soldiers rushing towards him but I knew he was dead with one look. The soldiers were passing my but they didn’t even notice me. Maybe this isn’t real, I tried to convince myself. The wind whipped my hair into my face convincing me that this was reality. The sight of the dead man compelled me to look again. His light blue eyes, now colourless, the scar across his left cheek and his mouth forming a slight “O.” I made a quick wish that he didn’t have family or kids at home to find out what happened. I tried to clear my head and all my thoughts were leading to that button. Turning that button was the last thing that happened before… I turned the turquoise button again this time.

I opened up my eyes and the brightness of the room coming from my bedroom window nearly blinded me. I looked down and there was no blood on my hands. My mum then opened the door.

I began to apologise, “Mum, I’m-“

“No Josh,” she said and walked into my room and motioned me to sit with her on my bed.

“I’m sorry I yelled at you before,” she said softly, “I’ve always been busy looking after you and Estelle and now that she’s at university and you’re always out with your friends.” She paused quickly to wipe out her eyes before continuing.

“I realised how much I miss your father and I’ve never shown you photos before but you deserve the right to know what he looks like.”

She handed me a photo before whispering, “he has your eyes.” The man smiling before me had a thick brown moustache and light blue eyes. But it was a mark on his face that sent shivers down my spine.

A thin scar on his left cheek.
