elcome to Alpine,
Texas – the county seat
of Brewster County
and home to Sul Ross State University and
the Museum of the Big Bend. With a
population approaching 6,000, Alpine is the
largest town in the region and serves as the
“Hub of the Big Bend.” There’s lots to love
about this vibrant town: mild climate,
mountain views, a lively art scene, and strong
community spirit. Alpine enjoys all the
cultural and educational benefits of a
university town, from theatre and dance to
archeology and intercollegiate rodeo. There’s
even a professional baseball team - the Alpine
Cowboys.
Alpine’s climate is almost perfect, with 247
sunny days per year. Summer highs average

90 degrees, thanks to the town’s 4,400-foot
elevation and the rainy season, which cools
things down from June through September.
Winter always brings a few snowfalls, but
most days reach 60 degrees.
Enjoying the outdoors is part of everyday
life in Alpine, with year-round hiking,
bicycling, golfing, hunting, and camping.
Within a two-hour drive you can be hiking
in the Davis Mountains, swimming in the
world’s largest outdoor spring-fed pool at
Balmorhea, backpacking in Big Bend
National Park or mountain-biking in Big
Bend Ranch State Park. The low humidity
and absence of big-city lights makes stargazing a backyard activity in Alpine,
although many choose to view distant
planets through telescopes at nearby
