Alpine is on the frontier of far West Texas, in vast, beautiful
and rugged country. It’s easy to get to if you’re willing to
invest a few traveling hours. You won’t be disappointed, as
Alpine and the entire Big Bend region are like no other in Texas.
Alpine Train Depot
HIGHWAYS: Alpine is situated on conjoined
U.S. Hwys. 67 and 90. Hwy. 67 is a major
north/south route running from the border
with Mexico at Presidio to San Angelo, after
crossing IH-10. Hwy. 90 is a major east/west
route running from Van Horn and IH-10 to
Del Rio and beyond to San Antonio. Both
highways are broad, shouldered and well
maintained for high speed. Travel on these
routes by car, motorcycle or bicycle is
convenient with small towns spaced about 30
miles apart.
For the more adventurous traveler, TX 17
can be taken from IH-10 in Balmorhea
through Wild Rose Pass to Fort Davis,
connecting with TX 118 into Alpine. Or, TX
118 can be taken from IH-10 in Kent through
th e Davis Mountains and Fort Davis to
Alpine. These routes are slower, very scenic,
over good roads and offer a unique
introduction to Big Bend country.
BUS: A private carrier, All Aboard America,
offers two north bound and two south bound
trips daily between Presidio and the MidlandOdessa Airport, with stops in Alpine. All
Aboard America connects with Greyhound in
Fort Stockton and Odessa for nationwide
service. The bus stop in Alpine is presently at
KC’s Quick Mart (837-5497) on east Hwy.

RAIL: Amtrak offers passenger rail service to
Alpine two times per week west bound and
two times per week east bound. The train uses
the Union Pacific tracks with stops in
Sanderson and Del Rio on its way to San
Antonio, and stops in El Paso and Tucson on
its way to Los Angeles. The historic train
depot is conveniently located at Holland Ave.
and Fifth St. in downtown Alpine. Visit

Air: The Alpine-Casparis Municipal Airport
(837-5929) is a public use general aviation
airport located north of the downtown area. It is
available for non-scheduled flights. Please check
with the airport for scheduled charter flight
service. The Midland-Odessa International
Airport (MAF) is a 2 ½ - 3 hour drive and is also
served by All Aboard America. The El Paso
International Airport (ELP) is a 3 ½ - 4 hour
drive.
