The sunsets of West Texas are their own event.
For over 70 years the Museum of the
Big Bend has been capturing the human
history of this expansive and varied region
of Texas. Permanent exhibits provide an
introduction and interpretation to the history and cultures of the Davis Mountains
and Big Bend region and reflect the contributions of the Native American's, Spanish, Mexican and Anglo Americans. A
temporary gallery rotates showings and
exhibits several times a year. The highlight
during March and April is the Trappings of
Texas, a juried showing and sale of the
best in contemporary cowboy art, gear
and crafts. Annual exhibits also include
showings from the historic Yana and Marty
Davis Map Collection and other permanent collections.
Housed in a beautifully restored 1930’s
era building on the Sul Ross State University campus, the Museum was founded in
1925. The Museum fulfills its motto - “a
land this vast requires a great storyteller”.
The Museum features free admission, a
gift/book store, guided tours and is handicap accessible. aT
