Annual Awards Banquet The annual Awards Banquet is held each January and honors an Alpine student and local business leaders with three different awards. The 2013 recipients and the awards they received are: Jonathan Frost received the Mr. Jim Francois - Student of the Year Award named in honor of Jim Francois, a strong supporter of Sul Ross University, Sunshine House, Alpine Public Library, Alpine High School graduate scholarships, the Visitors Center and other organizations. The Sul Ross Fine Arts Building is named in his honor. Shirley Biellier received the Benjamin Berkeley - Citizen of the Year Award named in honor of Dr. Berkeley who helped form the Alpine Commercial Club which is now the Alpine Chamber of Commerce. He was the first mayor, bank president, and was a Texas state senator.
