While low cost remains a significant part of the equation, Sul Ross meets or exceeds other selection criteria as well, including: desired majors, student and faculty diversity, small class sizes, and strong graduate school and/or job placement records. “I can think of numerous reasons – perhaps one for every enrolled student – for attending Sul Ross State University,” said Dr. Quint Thurman, interim President. “I believe that Sul Ross would be highly ranked on a similar virtue if we were to talk about value since we have the best residential housing in Texas, wonderful instructors and staff, very small classes where faculty get to know every student by name, and arguably the best year- around weather in the country,” he said. Thurman added, “Students attending Sul Ross and our alumni necessarily must be some of the wisest people on earth for having made such a good decision to attend college here. We can hear some of the reasons from our students themselves.” , English Kendall Hallmark, Florence Skyline major, Editor-in-Chief, The “My cousins all graduated from Sul Ross, so I was very familiar with the university. It was really affordable for me, compared to going to UTEP (University of Texas El Paso) or elsewhere. I have never had to worry how to pay for my education; between scholarships and work study, there has always been a plan that is workable for me. “I love the faculty; they are all helpful; the faculty and staff, no matter who it is, are always there to help you. “I love the Sul Ross environment. There is always something to do. The campus community is very friendly and very loving. “This is my home; I plan to stay here for my Master’s degree (in psychology), then attend the University of Washington for my doctorate and later establish a clinical psychology practice. Sul Ross provides a solid base for my future career.” “I had been out here before with my mom. I loved the area and decided I wanted to live here some day. “I attended a community college and decided I wanted to be a geology major. I Googled geology schools and when I found Sul Ross, I was ecstatic. It is one of the best geology schools in the state, and the area is definitely conducive to the subject matter. “I love my professors: they are engaging, friendly and want me to be here. Sul Ross is a good place to be active. I have two on-campus jobs that I love, I am a member of the Geology Club and involved in undergraduate research (McNair Program). And the classes are hard.” “This is a cool place; my first impressions were right.” “I started out at UTEP, but it was too big. A coach who knew me from high school called me and offered me a chance to play football. I accepted, even though I had never visited Alpine. 2014 Community Guide & Chamber of Commerce Directory | alpine TEXAS 21
