Mountainburg

Boasts Dinosaur Park, Much More
Mountainburg Mayor SUSAN WILSON
Mountainburg is a small town that stretches out along old U. S. 71, directly adjacent to the Interstate 49 corridor at Exit 29. The town has much within close proximity to entice anyone who loves the outdoors, according to Susan Wilson, who is early in her second term as mayor.
“ Our city limits only span two-and-a-quarter miles north to south,” Wilson said.“ Come see us. We are in a beautiful area for just about any outdoor activity.”
Nestled in the middle of the Boston Mountains, Mountainburg is known for its scenic mountain views. Nearby attractions include Lake Fort Smith State Park and the Lake Fort Smith Mountain Bike Trailhead just north of Mountainburg, Wilson said.
One popular attraction in Mountainburg is Dinosaur Park. The longtime city park gained the three large dinosaur statues in
1980. There’ s a triceratops, a brontosaurus and a tyrannosaurus rex. While the other two statues are fenced off, children can climb on and into the triceratops. In addition to the dinosaurs, the park features basketball courts, playground equipment, picnic areas and a running trail.
“ Our park is so popular with people from all over,” Wilson said.“ In 2019, we spent over $ 60,000 on new equipment and seating.”
The largest employer within the city limits is the Mountainburg School District, Wilson said. Other businesses in Mountainburg include the Mountainburg Public Library, Dairy Dream, Simmons Gas Station, Winn Mountain Golf and Dollar General, according to the city’ s website.
Several other businesses operate just outside the city, Wilson added. One such business is Meat Hunter Rods, a manufacturer of heavy-duty fishing gear, which ships its products all over the world, she said.
The city is also working on a $ 15 million project to extend water lines to residents and businesses outside the city limits, Wilson said. Much of that work is financed through grants, said Chris Keith,

Crawford County judge. The county also contributed some funding to Mountainburg’ s water project from its federal American Rescue Plan resources, Keith said.
“ Mountainburg is a booming city,” Keith said. The town was first incorporated in 1836, Wilson said. The last U. S. Census in 2020 recorded the Mountainburg population at 528, she said.
“( T) his was done during COVID, so numbers are not correct. We expect that they are really about 600,” Wilson said of the current population figures.
“ Mountainburg is a great place for schools and outdoor activities,” Wilson said.
