BOOK REVIEW:
TESTOSTERONE: STRONG ENOUGH FOR A MAN, MADE FOR A WOMAN
THAT DR. CHARLES Mok is an outside-the-box thinker is evident from his recently released book, Testosterone: Strong Enough for a Man, Made for a Woman. A strong entry in current women’ s health literature, Dr. Mok’ s book advocates for natural hormone therapy, especially testosterone treatments, for women. Fighting against the medical community’ s negative past experiences with synthetic hormones and its misconception about testosterone being a male-only hormone, Dr. Mok offers a new way forward for today’ s woman.
Due to the heavy use of synthetic hormones from the 1980s to the early 2000s, the health care industry developed a somewhat biased view on the topic. Some studies performed during that time period suggested that the use of hormones could lead to health problems, including breast cancer. Thus, fear arose in the general population regarding the use of hormones. Those issues, however, were only displayed with the use of synthetic hormones.
Dr. Mok, on the other hand, is a strong believer in the use of natural hormones. Natural hormones, he explains, are almost the polar opposite of their synthetic counterparts when it comes to health benefits. Natural hormones, rather than wreaking havoc on natural body systems, can reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’ s.
Regarding testosterone, it may seem counter-intuitive that Dr. Mok promotes its use for women. This goes against the conventional thinking that since testosterone is a male hormone, it will not benefit women. To the contrary, it has been shown that 95 percent of women can get relief of their menopause symptoms through testosterone treatments. It is becoming more and more common as a treatment method not only for relieving menopause symptoms but also for alleviating fatigue and promoting sexual health. The book describes one such innovative testosterone treatment method Dr, Mok is currently using on his patients: subdermal

testosterone pellets, which ensure even distribution throughout the body.
In summary, Testosterone: Strong Enough for a Man, Made for a Woman puts Dr. Mok’ s philosophy of natural hormones, testosterone, and women’ s health on full display. His unique take on the subject is a refreshing change in medical thinking. It also puts the impetus on fellow physicians— and the health care industry at large— to view menopause not as an inevitable fact of life but as something that can be overcome. The key for doctors is to add maximizing their patients’ quality of life to the omnipresent focus on improving their patients’ health. As a woman myself, I was overjoyed to find someone who is taking a new perspective on women’ s health issues and who has no fear of going against the conventional wisdom.
