ALLIANCE MEMBERS SUPPORT
USGA JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
By Robin Jervey CWGA
Pat Upham NHWGA
STRATHAM, New HampshireThis past July, the United States Golf
Association (USGA) Junior Amateur
Championship was conducted at the Golf
Club of New England. This was the first
national championship ever to be held in the
state of New Hampshire. The Women’s Golf
Alliance was well represented with board
members Pat Upham, New Hampshire
Women’s Golf Association (NHWGA)
immediate past president, and Robin
Jervey, Colorado Women’s Golf Association
executive director, in attendance. Upham
also serves on the USGA Regional Affairs
Committee.
Jervey, along with NHWGA past
president, Patti Wildman, served on the
Rules Committee for this prestigious
championship.
Their duties involved serving as walking
rules officials during both the stroke-play
qualifying and match-play rounds. To be
invited to serve as a USGA rules official,
individuals must have previous officiating
experience at the local level; they typically
serve on a USGA committee, and they must
demonstrate a solid knowledge of the Rules
of Golf, which is determined by their
performance on a grueling 3 ½-hour 100question exam. Jervey is a former
consulting member of the USGA Rules of
Golf Committee and currently serves on the
USGA‘s Joe Dey Award and Regional
Associations committees. Wildman
currently serves on the USGA Women’s
Mid-Amateur Championship Committee and
in the past has served on the USGA
Regional Affairs Committee. Both women
have served on the rules committee at

numerous U.S. Women’s Open
Championships.
The NHWGA recruited 40 of its members
to serve in various volunteer capacities for
the championship, filling 120 volunteer
shifts (out of 1200 total shifts), which
amounted to more than 880 volunteer
hours. These 40 women acted as
forecaddies, marshals, standard bearers,
walking scorers, practice range attendants,
shuttle and airport transportation drivers,
and airport greeters. They also provided
assistance with media relations, security,
volunteer desk help, player registration,
and general support. Upham volunteered
at the help desk.
New Hampshire’s first national
championship was a huge success, thanks
in part to the involvement of these Alliance
members and countless other volunteers.
