Alliance News Issue 1 Fall 2012 COOL from Page 3 manicured practice facility. “We’re finding that younger and younger girls are breaking the boundaries,” current WMGA junior golf chair Diane Mock said. “ A 10-year-old just qualified for the U.S. women’s Amateur. Those kinds of things happen because of nurturing and mentoring of the game at a young age. Golf can offer so many life lessons. Self confidence is so important today, and golf is one way to build it.” The clinic also introduces girls to the WMGA’s many competitions and programs. “Our goal is just to get girls here,” Mock said. “ Some of them even bring a friend along. The girls can play so many sports when they are young, but eventually most of them have to pick one. And we can show them some great courses and give them a place to showcase their talent.” The girls sprayed golf balls in all directions, stopping only long enough to make adjustments from the professional. When they moved from station to station, the conversation picked up. “ I like to have fun,” said Ava Lederman an 8-year-old from Nyack who came with Stepper. “When I’m playing golf, it’s just fun.” WARM from Page 1 Founding members were from Arizona, Colorado, California and Nevada. Mary Pomroy, Executive Director of the AWGA, has been influential in the organization and direction of the meeting since its inception. “We united in an effort to find an outlet to exchange ideas, share successes and challenges and be part of the larger golf community,” Mary explained. WARM’s eighth meeting was held in 2012 (the first WARM’s were conducted biannually) with 40 women representing 15 women’s golf associations attending. Interest is growing with more and more states continually attending, some annually, some bi-annually, others, as they are able. In all, 24 associations have attended the WARM. WARM 2013: SAVE THE DATE - March 11-13, 2013 (Mon-Wed) at Holiday Inn Express & Suites Phoenix Airport, AZ. We welcome your ideas/suggestions to help us with planning.
