6 The meridional region (to the south) is characterized by being marked off by large chains of islands and fractured by numerous fiords. Chile is located in a geologically unstable zone and periodically suffers from the effects of seismic and volcanic activity. The numerous rivers in Chile are relatively short; they are generally born in the Andes and flow in western direction towards the Pacific. In the northern and central region, rivers are fed basically from the eternal snow that covers the Andres. The most important rivers are, from north to south, Lluta, Loa, Elqui, Limarí, Choapa, Petorca, La Ligua, Aconcagua, Maipo, Rapel, Maule, Biobío, Imperial and Toltén.
