Country of the Month: Ecuador
This month we will be learning about Ecuador. Ecuador is located in South America and
its Capital city is Quito, which is exactly on the Equator Line. It is next to Peru and Colombia
and also to the Pacific Ocean.
Due to its location, it has the privilege of a Tropical climate and a very diverse
geography that ranges from the Andes to the Amazons. It has a Coast and also the Galapagos
Islands. For that precise reason, its flora and fauna are very varied. With such a varied
environment, we learn that it defines many aspects of our lives; for example, our food or clothes
depending upon the climate.
Through Ecuador´s culture we can learn to explore about how people inside the same
country can be different; they can speak different dialects or languages; or eat and dress in very
different ways. This diversity allows us to look for differences and make connections regarding
other countries that have already been studied; compare and contrast cultures and know more
about the human relations between people of different parts of the world.
When we are exposed to different experiences, that is when we become tolerant with
diversity, whether it be cultural, ideological, geographical, political, physical, moral, etc. That is
when we begin to understand that we are all different and that it is perfect to be different. It is a
way of learning to respect and value our roots and those of the people that surround us, finding in
this a never ending treasure used to exchange and learn every day.
Studying a country relates us directly with the following Human Units:
•
Understanding myself.
-
•
Understanding how I relate to others.
-
•
¿How does relating with another culture affect us positively or negatively?
¿How do we communicate with people of other countries and other cultures?
Understanding time and space relationship.
