Significant Activities per Age-Range and their Corresponding Tools for Thought
Infants:
Practical skills grow from the knowledge of how things work, partly gained from explanation and
mainly from the active manipulation of materials and components.
•
Allow space and time to young babies to carefully observe and manipulate simple
technological tools. Focus on the use of their senses. Follow their wonders and interests and
model the language of thinking.
Thinking Keys:
Form Key: Observe and describe. What makes this tool unique? What is it like? What
does it feel?
Function Key: Purpose of the tool and its role. How does it work? What is this for?
Thinking Routine:
See/Think/Wonder: Model the language. Ask infants what they see when they are
pointing out. Name colors, shapes and everything that comes to their attention. Ask
them what they think about it (use the questions from the Keys) and put words in their
actions. Wonder with the young babies.
•
Promote their imagination and creativity and let them design their favorite items and or t-shirts.
Thinking Key: Change Key: How can I change this into something different? How can I
make it look better?
Thinking Routine: Connect/Extend/Challenge
