Thinking Tools
The VESS disk not only integrates very clearly
the areas necessary to promote meaningful learning and
create a balanced life with meaning and wisdom, but
also facilitates the teacher’s process of integration and
implementation by providing a list of thinking tools
specific to promoting the habits of mind and mental
dispositions outlined above.
With the disk, teachers hold a tool that will help
them visualize all areas necessary for effective learning, foster the vocabulary of thinking, and
reflect on their work as a professional educators. Similarly, this tool also assists teachers in
finding the appropriate thinking routines to enhance certain specific habits, and helps the teacher
connect with the thinking tools book, which not only summarizes the routines and tools, but
gives practical advice on how to use the routines and document the results.
We live in the age of intelligence, and it is important to permanently exercise our
thinking skills because thinking is part of everything we are and do. We learn to think through a
process of enculturation and the process becomes more effective when it is conscious and
thinking is “visible.”
