Design Office: The City is a Garden
Art Exhibition by Kim Gordon
By Johnny Spice
Kim Gordon’s new art exhibition “Design Office: The City is A Garden” is as advertised by the theme. The
pieces (to me) represent thins you would see in the city I call home, New York.
From the walking stick in the corner, to the plywood boxes, to the paintings that had no real image on
them you could describe, to the pieces on the floor that symbolized garbage, it definitely had a New
York feel.
My complaints if you would call them that are as follows.
1 – A lack of explanation. – You just walk around the room with no guidance and without the pieces
being labeled or seeming to hold to some semblance of order. It makes it hard to judge how the art
should be viewed. I’m all for leaving things open to interpretation, but a jumping off point to help guide
you to the interpretation she wants would be helpful.
2 – If you are going to put things on the floor, some way to know they are there so that people don’t trip
over them while trying to photograph the other pieces would be helpful. Again, I’m not trying to tell
someone how to express themselves artistically, but if someone trips over the piece and destroys it,
how is really to blame.
I would call the show bad, but overall I would say I was disappointed, I was expecting more than I got.
But hey, you may like it. Go check it out.
“Design Office: The City is a Garden” runs through July 24th at 303 Gallery, 507 W 24th St, NY, NY 10011.
