“No Cities to Love”
Sleater-Kinney
(Sub Pop)
Sometimes, when a band goes on a long hiatus and returns, they put out an album that
makes you wonder why they bothered ( “Strays” by Jane’s Addiction, for example) or
sometimes they make you wonder why they took so long to put out something so great
(“Majesty Shredding” by Superchunk), well the first new release by Sleater-Kinney in a
decade falls firmly in the later category.
It only takes 7 seven seconds of fuzzed guitar on the opening track “Price Tag” to
announce that this is a record that made the wait worth every second of it.
Over the course of just over 32 minutes that are just not enough the band shows why this
album and the accompanying tour are the most anticipated of 2015 to date.
Tracks that demand extra attention include the title track, a song that falls in the category
of ones you play again as soon as it finishes the first time ( The song is also has an
amazing video that just illustrates what makes it a crime that it wont be the hit it deserves
to be…. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cj2k3QsHmyM) Any song that has a
singable chorus and includes a classic line like “Hopes a burden or it sets you free” show
how it demanded to be the title track.
