How to describe a Selector Dub Narcotic performance? Music? Art? Night at the
club? All of that and more.
Selector Dub Narcotic aka Calvin Johnson is a skilled MC who does not get nearly
enough notice for his skills and ability to hold a room all by himself with just a
computer and microphone (at one point in the show – an incredible high point I
might add – he dispensed with the microphone and had us all entranced while he
performed the “new single” as he described it “All For The Sake of Rhymin”) or for
his lyrical prowess and flow.
Even the way he interacted with the crowd between songs was great. He had
people laughing and thinking. All the songs you would have wanted were
performed and were amazing.
Some of my favorites included, the above mentioned, “The Party’s Over,” “I Need
Sum,” and the should be top ten hit, “Hotter Than Hott.”
He ended the show dancing with the crowd, but not in the sense you think. He
put on some great dance music and danced around the room with us all. The
show could not have ended more perfectly. If you get an opportunity to see
Selector Dub Narcotic do not miss it, I know I won’t ever miss one in my town.
