The United Nations (UN) General Assembly decided to celebrate February 11 as "Women and Girls Day in International Science" every year in order to encourage women and girls to exist in the fields of science, technology and engineering in 2015.

In addition, the UN identified this year's theme as "Investing in Women and Girls in Science for Inclusive Green Growth".

Although there have been marked advances in women's empowerment and gender equality, especially in recent years, UN data reveal that "less than 30 percent" of researchers worldwide are still women.
