The Tower of DAVE
Zoe W ( 8th Grade )
It was a crisp winter evening , the kind where powdered sugar snow covers everything in a fine layer of whiteness . The outside air was cold and fresh , but the fire blazing inside fought away all of the cold . The crackling fire cast a warm , homey glow across the living room of my cabin . The cabin was a cute little log cabin in the middle of a wooded community . It had a second floor loft and a large living room with a couch , two comfy worn out chairs , and a fireplace burning with life . The living room is also connected to the dining room with a large table and eight mismatched wooden chairs . My mom was sitting at the living room table working diligently , she had stacked up board games to put her computer on top of so that she would not get bad posture . She is technically not supposed to work at the cabin because there was supposed to be a no work policy , unfortunately we always break it . My sister was who knows where ( she was always disappearing ), probably reading a book she had already read a thousand times . I was sitting on the couch staring at the popping fire , and trying to decide what I should do , but I would quickly learn the answer .
In the living room we also had a plastic tub of Legos , it was from a neighbor down the street who was selling it at a yard sale . We made little monsters out of them and gave the monsters names . My dad started building with the Legos , and at first I didn ’ t really pay him any attention because he is always doing weird stuff like that and the fire was so transfixing . But eventually it started to get tall , first as tall as the weird wooden crate we use as a coffee table , then as tall as the arm of the chair . That is where Dave comes in . Dave is my Dad ’ s college as well as his friend , I had also known him for a long time , and he is a pretty funny guy . He jokes around with me and is just generally kind . When ever I think of him I think of teasing me about having rootbeer , of his daughter babysiting me and my sister , and us playing monopoly . He came with us to the cabin as well , though I ’ m not entirely sure why because there was no one else there with him . He started helping my Dad construct what appeared to be a quickly rising tower of Legos . Then , since I had nothing better to do I also started to help to . It was a little bit tedious but it gave me something to do . At the bottom of the tower the larger blocks had been put then whenever someone felt like it or if we could not find another block that size we decreased the block size . There was no pattern to the color so it just looked like a tall not in rainbow order but still rainbow tower . I don ’ t know when but my sister started to help to , so we had a whole team working on this ( now getting pretty tall , tower ). When the tower got too tall , I could not help anymore because I just could not reach the top of the enormously tall tower .
Finally after what seem like a really long time ( because I was bored and I couldn ' t help make the tower ) they completed the masterpiece . They had stopped because it was just getting too unbalanced even though there was a large flat piece as a base . It was about as tall as my dad , who is 5ft . 9 inch , and it was like a monument for Legos . Then the thought suddenly popped into my head , a tower of this magnitude would definitely need a name ! So I said to the room as a whole , “ We need to name the tower .” They probably came up with really bad names but it was my sister who came up with the idea . She did not say it at first but just started doing stuff , it was really confusing because one minute she was standing right next to me and the next she wasn ’ t . Then she flew into the kitchen , grabbed a pair of scissors and the duct tape ( not sure why we have it but we always keep some duct tape at the cabin ). She started cutting , and cutting , we could not see what she was making but it seemed to be really complex . She came back with what looked like a duct tape mustache and monocle but they were both way to small for anybody to
