The United States has been instrumental
in advances in telecommunications and
technology. For example, Bell's
laboratories of the AT&T company
expanded the American industrial
revolution with a series of inventions
including LED, transistor, UNIX operating
system and programming language
Herman Hollerith was a 20-year-old
engineer who realized the need to
improve the United States government
census system. The result of years of
work was a card system that was so
effective that the census completion
time was halved. It started with the
Tabulating Machine Company. In 1960,
the company's name was changed to
International Business Machine IBM,
dominating the computer business.9
The company revolutionized the
industry by introducing the first
understandable, easy-to-use family of
computers for anyone, (the System / 360
), which caused many of its competitors
to join or go bankrupt, leaving IBM in a
more dominant position.10 IBM is
known for several inventions such as the
floppy disk, introduced in 1971,
supermarket cash registers , and the
introduction in 1973 of the IBM 3614
Consumer Transaction Facility for
customer monetary transactions, an old
version of ATMs
