Tiny olives require small flies, long leaders, finer tippets. Recommended length: 11 to 15 feet to 3 - 5X tippet.

Recommended rods vary and depend on the angler's ability. Casting small flies on long leaders in a straight line with good line control is absolute. But the charm is setting the hook on fine gear and small flies. Like all things, practise makes perfect. Go fishing.

On larger waters, some prefer longer rods due to its ability to cast further and mend line easier (arguably), while others tend to enjoy working the tight seems close to shore with a short rod. A 4 weight, 9' rod is great starting point for most olive hatches.

While larger rivers (ie. Oldman, Red Deer, Bow), smaller ones (ie. Crowsnest or Little Smoky), fast waters (ie. Ram or Castle), slow streams (ie. Stauffer Creek) are each very different in nature, all have blue-winged olives.
