BOW RIVER

- A NYMPHING PRIMER -

Nymphing is the most consistent tactic to catch Bow River trout. It can be tricky determining where to cast, what flies to use, etc. Once these problems are answered, the consistency in catching fish is wonderful. Let’s have a look...

Gear

5 or 6 weight rods with a medium- fast or fast action are ideal for casting indicators. A 9’ rod will handle most situations easily, but a 9.5 or 10 foot rod adds a lot of versatility while mending in faster currents and reaching mends across seams. A weight forward line’s shorter front taper allows smoother casting indicators and heavy nymphs. There are many lines on the market with long heavy heads ideal for nymphing. Reels just need to match your preference while balancing the rod, keeping it enjoyable to fish. Find one that you can comfortably fish with all day.
