Fish the Booby

So you’ve got a fly tied on and it’s sunk down on a Hi-D line. Now what? If the fly represents something natural, say a dragonfly, fish it the same as you would with typical imitations.

Booby retrieves run the gamut. I use a few basic retrieve styles when fishing the Booby; experiment with the following until you get into fish.

1.Looooong pauses with the odd slow strip

2.A slow but consistent handtwist

3.A moderately paced strip retrieve with regular pauses

4.A very fast retrieve with regular pauses

5.A very fast retrieve and don’t stop no matter what

Tips and Tricks

As with anything, there are always a few considerations.

-Boobies are wind resistant –don’t go lighter than 3x tippet or 6lb spinning fluorocarbon.

-Don’t be under-gunned; even a smaller Booby will be miserable to cast for any length of time on a light rod –use 6-8wt rigs.

-The faster the retrieve, the deeper the fly will remain.

-Try two flies on the “Washing Line Rig” – go 8ft to the (lightly weighted) first fly, then a further 4-6ft to the Booby. The first fly will help pull the booby deeper, and the Booby will help keep the other fly from sinking right to the bottom.

-Lastly, experiment!
