When to Fish the Weeds

While weeds and reeds typically provide the best options for feeding trout, they don’t feed there 24/7. Weather patterns, seasonal changes, and other external factors all play a part in how well they fish.

Days early and late in the year provide easily the best shallow water action. The water here warms first, encouraging weed growth, and attracts trout looking for food. Spring and fall offers cool water in the shallows, and trout feed in this area throughout the day.

During summer, water warms considerably on most low elevation lakes. During this time, the shallows will become too warm to hold trout during the daytime highs. Early and late in the day, during windy weather, or cold periods will bring trout back into the shallow, weed-filled zones of the lake.
