WELCOME ter which together could have cut cruise traffic by more than 75 %. Here in Juneau a grassroots group formed “ Protect Juneau ’ s Future ” to get the truth out about these initiatives . Along the way developing a large group of supporters from all aspects of the community and reaching out to other affected communities . The good news is through the work of this well organized and supported group , the petitions failed .
Please keep in mind if you see extremism like this growing in your community that acting fast to make the economic and social impacts known is critical . This group , while Juneau based , would have put a negative light on tourism statewide if they had received enough signatures . Something the State , City , and supporting organizations have spent years and millions of dollars building could have been broken down in a flash . Not to mention the immediate harm it would have done to Juneau and its surrounding communities . By acting quickly and getting the word out , Juneau was able to bring this back to a collaborative process of tourism planning . Through publicly accessible groups like the mayor ’ s Visitor Industry Task Fource and Tourism Best Management Practices ( TBMP ), we are fostering cooperation , conversation , inclusion , and planning to support all voices in the community .
Juneau Lynn Canal CHARR would like to thank Alaska CHARR and its affiliates and members for support provided in the efforts to shutdown these initiative petitions . That directly helped in this win , not just for Juneau , but the rest of the State . Please keep the line of communication open from Members to affiliates to State CHARR . The system works when you speak up .
